Lewis and Clark Elementary School
Astoria, Oregon

In March of 1999, Astoria School District passed, with great community support, a $21.5 million general obligation bond for construction, remodel and infrastructure improvements to the district’s aging schools. Lewis and Clark Elementary was the first school in the District to undergo construction. The challenge to BLRB was to create a school that reflected the community’s character while being responsive to the educational program goals.

BLRB’s unique collaborative approach meant that not only school district administration but also staff, students, parents, business and community members were involved in its design. One challenge was that a portion of the site was wetlands. It was decided that, instead of siting the school as far as possible from this environmentally sensitive area, the school would “hug” the wetlands and exploit them as an educational opportunity.

An example of contextual design at its best, BLRB incorporated the wetlands into the design to create an outdoor learning lab that is also used by the local high school’s environmental education program. In doing so, the design facilitated and even elevated learning opportunities. The single-story, wood-frame building featured exposed wood and truss forms in keeping with the architectural style of the Astoria community, historically a logging and fishing town. It’s a traditional school design that fits the community’s character and inspires both educators and students.

BLRB approached the design with both energy efficiency and green architecture in mind. Features included the use of daylighting to bring natural light to classrooms and corridors, natural ventilation in all classrooms, use of nontoxic building materials, use of recycled materials when appropriate, and use of certified lumber. The result is a school that practices what it teaches—environmental sustainability, responsibility and stewardship.

“I would not hesitate to recommend BLRB to any school district about to embark on any stage of a facilities improvement program, planning, remodel or new construction.”

-R. Howard Clarke, Facilities/Project Manager, Astoria School District

“(BLRB) staff has been instrumental in keeping the projects running smoothly and within budget … I would, without reservation, give your firm the highest recommendation.”
