South Lake High School South Lake High School is an alternative high school that serves a diverse student body in the South Seattle community. Currently in the South Shore building with The New School and the Rainier Beach Community Center, the high school lacks identity and a sense of prominence. A new South Lake High School, to be built in the northeast quadrant of the site, will provide staff and students with a facility that meets their educational needs, while upholding the all important social connections on which the school is founded. South Lake High School, both philosophically and figuratively, is all about connections. Connections are formed between students and teachers, students and other students, and school and community. The building is designed to support and strengthen that notion. Through the design of an open two-story commons a strong sense of school community is created. The classrooms, although traditional in size and shape, are connected by moveable partitions and visually connected to the flex space and pull out spaces through the use of interior glazing. In order to accommodate the South Lake educational program with a projected student capacity of 200 students, a two-story structure is required. Both floors of this approximately 32,000 square foot facility are organized around the student commons. This grand space will be the school's focal point and will serve as its heart and social hub. This two-story, lofty, daylighted space will not only be a place for students and staff to eat, perform and socialize throughout the day, but it will also serve as an important community gathering and meeting space for south Seattle.
