project overview
The design of the 118,320-square-foot Baker Middle School is contemporary, enduring and timeless in form and provides a sustainable, maintainable and technologically forward educational environment. Working closely with a 22-person broad-based planning committee, BLRB’s design team facilitated the development of a list of primary guiding principles that informed the school’s design. The development of personalized learning environments was at the top of Baker’s design ethos. Contemporary technologies were also employed to aid in classroom instruction including Learning Walls with SMART Board interactive whiteboards, sound enhancement, document cameras and wireless internet capability. Sustainability was another guiding value, and Baker’s design and construction were infused with green elements including on-site timber reclamation, storm water management including rainwater harvesting, transparency, a geothermal heat exchange system, natural ventilation and a building dashboard resource measurement system.
