project overview

Upon passage of a $33.5 million capital construction bond in 2013, BLRB was engaged for planning, design and delivery of a new K-5 elementary school on an undeveloped site in Prineville, Oregon. The district and planning committee’s overarching goals were to develop a design that provided small learning environments and supported collaborative and experiential learning opportunities. Student safety, facility security, community access and life-cycle operational cost efficiencies were additional primary directives for the design team. Barnes Butte supports up to 700 students in a flexible, personalized and responsive school tailored to the unique elements of the district’s educational program.

Barnes Butte’s design reflects a comprehensive, state-of-the-art learning environment that supports personalized instruction and community building among students and teachers. The school is organized around seven highly-flexible learning communities, grouped by grade level, each conveying a unique character, identified through use of color, signage and murals depicting local geographical locations.
