project overview

The University of Puget Sound, located in Tacoma Washington, was the subject of an extensive survey prepared by Gene Grulich, AIA, BLRB’s preservation architect. The campus contains over 50 academic buildings and a large number of residential structures that are currently occupied as offices or student residences. Over the years, several buildings have been added to the campus and the assessment documents the history and development of the university campus. Each building was inventoried in accordance with Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation guidelines. The report established the first historic preservation record for the university property and identified the potential for designation as a historic district. Project deliverables included a guideline document, patterned on the Secretary of the Interior Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, for use by the university when contemplating changes to the exterior of the buildings.
