Our recent project with Bend La Pine Schools, the new North Star Elementary School, was recognized with a Third Place award in the AIA Bend Chapter’s first annual, People’s Choice Awards.

The awards program’s aim is to educate and inspire community residents by showcasing architecture in and around Bend and Central Oregon. Projects are judged on aesthetics and contextual design, interior environmental health and well-being, and sustainability. Voting on the eleven entries received was open to both chapter members and the general public.

Funded by a $268 million capital construction bond passed in 2017, this new elementary school was developed to increase student capacity in this fast growing region of Central Oregon and serves 600 students in grades PK-5.

Guiding design principles included sensitivity to interior scale and building massing, sustainability, life-cycle cost-efficiency, student safety and facility security. The Northwest exterior expression, selection of natural materials and warm color palette present an inviting character both outside and inside the school.
