After serving this client for a remodel and commercial kitchen addition, we were engaged for design and delivery of a brew pub addition to expand seating capacity by 100 guests...and a deep-space-viewing telescope. The dining expansion incorporates several signature brand features including observation windows into the brewery and glazing walls that allow the dining space to be opened fully to the outdoors when weather permits.
Guests can climb the new spiral staircase to access the second story patio, and then continue to the now local-landmark observatory silo to take in the sky view from the deep space viewing telescope.
In addition to sky viewing from the observatory deck, the main floor integrates indoor and outdoor dining, offering views to the surrounding terrestrial landscape and interior views to the working brewery on-site.
It’s not every day that a restaurant incorporates a telescope, so our design team collaborated with staff from the University of Oregon, Pine Mountain Observatory and Sunriver Observatory to understand the technical design requirements. Seismic independence, reducing ambient light pollution and optimizing viewing conditions were among the unique considerations to address.
